This summer group exhibition challenges the boundaries between fine art and craft, offering a range of functional objects made by fine artists – including furniture, eating utensils, clothing, and toys. Also, nonfunctional objects made by craftspeople – including paintings, photography and sculpture. With works by Jonas Criscoe, Ryan Thayer Davis, Jenn Hassin, Beili Liu, Dave McClinton, Steve Parker, Denise Prince, and more.

Ivester Contemporary: Form and Function

This excellent venue in Canopy is throwing a party, livening everyone up with musical acts and a silent auction. The auction will feature artwork and ephemera from Art from The Streets, SAGE Studio and Gallery, Gutterblood, All The Sudden, and Concept Animals. And, we daresay, a good time will be had by all.

Tsz Kam’s first solo exhibition with the gallery expresses their own hybrid self-identification by featuring mythological subjects, chimerical. monsters, and decorative motifs from around the world. "Kam’s exposure to the fluorescent, festive streets of Hong Kong and the aesthetics of the nightclub that employed their parents during Kam’s childhood, coupled with an eventual move to Texas, heavily influenced the work in this exhibition." Bonus: Beili Liu's installation, Inheritance, is also featured.

Jacob Guzman’s art takes up SPACE. It’s got the scale and scope that needs to be seen in person, so rush to take in the last week of his work filling the walls of Ivester Contemporary. Guzman depicts BIPOC characters in a world full of the mundane, the joyful, the soul-crushing. So, you know, our world. “Jacob Guzman: The World We Live In”

It’s the second coming of surrealism at Ivester Contemporary. Josias Figueirido aptly updates the legacy of Dalí and Chagall with his vivid dreamscapes. His exhibit presents spirit guides Piri the Dreamer and Flying Coyote in increasingly absurd settings, smoothly bubbled characters possessing hypnotic shininess. Paintings of them hang in eerily vivid flashe paint, existing harmoniously beside their animated counterpoints in an immersive, interactive reality. Encounters in the Garden Paintings by Josias Figueirido

Hot off the heels of the delightful “Encounters in the Garden” by Josias Figueirido, Kevin Ivester has curated another summer banger of a show at Ivester Contemporary. This time, the gallery features a whole slew of Texas artists, co-curated by Tiffany K. Smith, united under the theme “Infinite Scroll.” That refers to the ubiquitous web design technique that automatically generates more content that continuously loads as the user scrolls down a page. “This feature, while facilitating easy access to endless information, has also led to significant consequences such as doom scrolling, information overload, and a shift in our attention from our surroundings to our screens,” the exhibition text reads. “The participating artists have responded to this call with thought-provoking work that reflects on topics ranging from our online personas and the way we treat one another to endless calls to action and the consistent flood of information, and comments on the new developments of AI-generated artwork.” The show, which opens Sat., July 20, and runs till the end of August, promises to be a uniquely local answer to a global problem. – Lina Fisher
