Debbe Tipping leads a seminar exploring the specific record groups that locate African Americans after Emancipation, during the Civil War, and during slavery. Tipping will share research and strategies for moving forward.

Carver hosts its annual Kwanzaa celebration with a program inspired by Nia ("purpose"), the principle for the fifth day of Kwanzaa. Featuring CDF Austin Freedom School scholars with special guest reader Qi Dada from Riders Against the Storm, African percussionist and storyteller Ibrahim Aminou, "Spirit of the Drum" featuring poet Ms. Eartha Colson, African bites, crafts,  and more.

Carver Museum offers three chances to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with activities including documentary screenings, educational workbook pages, and crafts. Community members of all ages are welcome to join in for one or all three days.

MLK Day Activity Stations

Black History Month was originated in the U.S. in 1970 by students and educators at Kent State University, with the precursor being Negro History Week, started by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This year’s BHM theme is African Americans and the Arts, so the Carver is highlighting Black poets, musicians, visual artists, and more with storytelling, crafts, and lots of other fun and educational activities to bring history to life. – Kat McNevins
