This is Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking's second annual exhibition showcasing Austin’s new and upcoming printmakers, curated by Alyssa Ebinger and featuring work from students who are receiving their BFA, B.A., B.S., or MFA with a major or minor concentration in printmaking from an Austin area college or university.

This is a new exhibition of polymer photogravures curated by Matthew Magruder. (Polymer photogravure is a process that involves etching photo images into a printing plate which, after inking, can transfer images to paper using a traditional etching press.) Featuring works by Howard Hilliard, Elena Lipkowski, Christos Pathiakis, Bonnie Maxey, Peter Nickel, Michelle C. Halsall, Karolina Phillips, Kevin Black, Andrew Kennedy, Susan Cohn, William Tolan, and more.

This is a solo exhibition of Annalise Gratovich's color woodcut series, “Carrying Things from Home," based on matryoshka dolls and the textile patterns from Ukrainian embroidery. Bonus: The artist's most recent collages and woodcuts are also on display in this show.

Tusa, Sicily, in addition to being a beautiful seaside Italian village, was also birthplace to artist Jeffrey Dell’s newest monotypes. He created the works during an artist’s residency, utilizing traditional printmaking materials to capture the vertical nature of his surroundings. In his artist’s statement, Dell explains his goal with the monotypes as interrogating what happens between seeing and understanding images. “The mind wants and expects to see certain things and is capable of leaping ahead,” Dell writes. “Mostly those leaps are amazingly correct, but sometimes they’re wrong. I’m trying to make work that creates a moment when it’s possible to notice such dynamics while also avoiding the ‘punchline’ of an optical illusion – that is, to deny a moment of ‘getting it.’” – James Scott

For the rest of this month and into the next, Flatbed Press, local bastion of multiple originals, is putting you on to the next gen of Austin printmakers. For the third year in a row, this annual exhibition features work from students receiving a printmaking degree from any college in the Austin area, including UT, ACC, St. Edward’s, Texas State, and Southwestern. The work ranges from traditional to experimental, both in form and process.
